MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – During a special meeting Thursday evening, the Martinsville City Council voted 4-1 in approval of an ordinance to file for a contested reversion.

Martinsville filed for a contested reversion in August of 2020, leaving the process pending in order to open negotiations with Henry County.

A Voluntary Settlement Agreement was approved after months of negotiating. However, the Henry County Board of Supervisors voted to breach the agreement in December 2021.

As a result, Martinsville City Council feels Henry County can not be trusted again in negotiations and feels, going forward, a contested reversion is the best decision for Martinsville residents.

The ordinance for a contested reversion will be filed in the Martinsville Circuit Court and sent to the Virginia Supreme Court petitioning the court to form a three-judge panel to make the ruling on town reversion.
