Man turns himself in after stabbing incident that killed one, injured another in South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (WFXR) – Police in South Boston are investigating a stabbing that occurred early Saturday morning, leaving one person dead and another injured.

According to police, they responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 26 to the Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital emergency room for a call related to two victims who had arrived with stab wounds.

When officers arrived, they found 48-year-old Imil Wheeler of North Carolina, with multiple stab wounds. They also found 40-year-old Lavonnyea Ali from South Boston, with a stab wound to her arm.

Ali was taken to Duke University Hospital due to her injuries.

However, Wheeler did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:49 a.m. An autopsy will be performed

South Boston Police subsequently arrested 58-year-old Lionel Russell Barnett from South Boston, who turned himself in to authorities. He is being charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of murder in the second degree.

Barnett is being held at the Halifax County Adult Detention Center without bond.

During the course of the investigation, officers determined that the incident took place in the parking lot at the Willow Oaks Apartments, near building 360 in South Boston.
