UPDATE: Man dies after sustaining injuries from Thursday fire in Danville

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — A man has died from injuries he sustained in a fire Thursday morning in Danville.

Ronald W. Hazelwood passed away on Friday, May 28 at the University of North Carolinian Burn Center.

The Danville Fire Department says they arrived at 49 Fairfield Avenue the morning of Thursday, May 27 to find fire and smoke showing from the front window of the house. They also got a report of someone being trapped in the house.

Neighbors from the community advised that there were possibly one or two people inside the building. Search and rescue operations were immediately initiated, as well as fire attack.

The victim was located and removed from the structure, while emergency medical care began as soon as he was out of the fire area.

The victim was brought by Danville Life Saving Crew to SOVAH Health Danville and later transported to UNC-Chapel Hill, where he died from his injuries.

The fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshals Office.
