MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — A Martinsville man is in custody facing a number of felony charges following a Sunday night shooting that sent another man to the hospital.
According to the Martinsville Police Department, officers responded to Dunlap Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7 and found 39-year-old Johnny Omar Spencer of Martinsville, who had been shot.
On Monday, Nov. 8, the department told WFXR News that Spencer was in serious condition after being transferred from Sovah Health Martinsville to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
However, officials have not shared any new information about Spencer’s status at this time.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Nov. 10, police announced that 39-year-old Donte Cheron Freeman was arrested in connection with the Dunlap Street Shooting.
The department says Freeman was taken into custody without incident by Carilion Health System Police when he went to visit a relative at a Roanoke hospital on an unrelated issue.
According to authorities, Freeman was charged with the following felonies:
- Aggravated malicious wounding
- Armed robbery
- Use of a firearm to commit aggravated malicious wounding
- Use of a firearm while committing armed robbery
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
- Willfully discharging a firearm in a street, resulting in bodily injury
Since he is currently on federal probation, police say Freeman will be held without bail.
