UPDATE 1:10 p.m.: A deadly crash investigation is underway involving a car that hit a Henry County school bus Friday morning. The driver who died was not wearing a seatbelt, police say.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash took place shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 28 on Preston Road near Meadowood Trail.

Authorities say a 2011 Bluebird School Bus pulled out of a driveway and was making a left turn onto Preston Road when it was was struck by a 2018 Kia Optima.

Police tell WFXR News that the driver of the Kia — 51-year-old Michael Scott Dunkley of Martinsville — was not wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene of the crash.

Meanwhile, the driver of the school bus — identified by officials as 71-year-old Thomas E. Dillon Jr. of Martinsville — was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the incident. There were no students on the bus at the time.

According to authorities, speed was a factor in the crash. 

The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the crash, which is still under investigation at this time.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — According to Henry County Public Schools, a school bus was involved in a crash Friday morning with an oncoming vehicle.

The district says the crash took place on Friday, Jan. 28 while the bus was starting its morning route.

School officials say there were no students on the bus at the time of the incident.

WFXR News has reached out to Virginia State Police for more information about this crash, but has yet to hear back.
