Henry County family accused of pandemic relief, unemployment fraud scheme

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Federal agents have accused a Henry County family of defrauding the United States out of $150,000 in pandemic relief funds.

WFXR News is not naming the family right now because they have not been formally charged.

Court documents say the family applied for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan and loan forgiveness, saying their company had three active employees.

However, at the same time, two of those named in the indictment also applied for unemployment benefits through the Commonwealth.

Agents from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) believe the family used the money to pay for lifestyle expenses — including several vacations — instead of spending the money in the way required by the law.

The family is due for an arraignment hearing on Nov. 15.
