HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a call regarding a male subject floating face-down in the Smith River.
The initial call came in at 11:13 a.m. on Oct. 29.
The remains were recovered from the river and transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia for identification and a preliminary autopsy which showed no signs of foul play or homicide.
The victim was identified as Edward Harrison Ariail, 67, from High Point, N.C.
Ariail suffered from dementia and was last seen on Oct. 23.
Ariail’s family contacted the High Point Police Department and reported him missing. Subsequently, a Silver Alert was issued for his disappearance.
Henry County Sheriff’s deputies recovered Ariail’s vehicle in the 2700 block of Fairystone Park Highway in Bassett.
