Danville Sheriff’s Office addresses social media article about fight at Danville jail

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — The Danville Sheriff’s Office released a statement Thursday afternoon addressing an article making its way around social media about an alleged fight at the Danville jail.

The sheriff’s office says an article was circulating on Facebook claiming a fight took place inside the jail shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, which resulted in a response from Danville deputies and police officers.

“This article is entirely false,” the Danville Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post Thursday afternoon. “While we are uncertain of the basis of this false information, we believe it may have spawned from an outside incident that occurred yesterday evening.”

Authorities say that outside incident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19.

In addition, the sheriff’s office describes the incident as nothing more than an argument between civilians outside of the jail, where deputies initially responded before members of the Danville Police Department joined in.

According to officials, nobody was injured and no inmates were involved in the altercation.
