DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — A Danville man charged with two felonies in connection with the death of his 8-month-old son in June 2020 will now serve 15 years in prison.

Police began investigating on June 12, 2020 after staff at SOVAH Health notified them about the baby boy’s death. He was reportedly found unresponsive by family members — who called 911 — and then EMS transported the boy to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Kanyon Wade Guthrie, the boy’s father, was then arrested in August 2020.

More than a year later, on Monday, Oct. 25, Guthrie was sentenced to a total of 15 years for the following charges, according to court records:

  • Felony homicide: 30 year sentence with 17 years suspended, for a total of 13 years
  • Felony child abuse: 10 year sentence with eight years suspended, for a total of two years

Court documents say Guthrie will also spend 18 months on probation after he is released from prison.
