DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Firefighters in Danville have spent hours at the scene of a structure fire that broke out at an unoccupied “hoarder house” Wednesday morning.

The Danville Fire Department says the fire was reported on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 823 Glendale Avenue.

According to the department, the first units arrived at the scene at approximately 5:38 a.m., they reported the fire showing from a window of the small house. When personnel entered the house through the front door, they reportedly came across a significant amount of flames in the first room.

Officials say crews quickly knocked down the fire with a single handline, disconnected the utilities, and searched the house for occupants. However, there was nobody inside the house at the time of the fire and there are no reports of injuries.

“The house is a ‘hoarder’ house with extensive items throughout the house piled at least three foot high. This made controlling and overhauling the fire a tough task,” Battalion Chief Brian Alderson said in a statement on Wednesday. “The fire was deep-seated in the contents. Much of the contents had to be removed by hand to find any hidden fire.”

The department says 15 fire personnel responded to the initial call, later receiving assistance from the Danville Life Saving Crew, Danville Utilities, and the Danville Police Department. The Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to investigate the fire.

As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, fire officials tell WFXR News that personnel are still at the scene, sifting through the contents for hidden flames and trying to determine the cause of the fire.
