DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — The Danville Public Works Department is getting ahead of the winter storm expected to over the weekend.

Crews have been busy pretreating major thoroughfares, bridges, and overpasses as the storm could bring snow and possibly sleet and freezing rain to Danville.

They are using brine, which is a mixture of water and salt. The water in the brine evaporates and leaves the salt behind on the road, which will help break the bond between the snow and the roadway.

Crews will not be pretreating residential streets, according to Public Works.

Plows will also be mounted onto Public Works trucks and crews will begin working 12-hour round-the-clock shifts. Crews will plow major roads when an inch of snow accumulates on the streets.

Danville Utilities is also preparing for the weekend winter storm. Crews are scheduled to work staggered 16-hour shifts in the event there is a large-scale outage. You can review the storm preparation guide on the company’s website.

The City of Danville also has a non-emergency number available for those who need shelter. You are asked to call 434-799-5111 and hit option 8 to make arrangements for shelter.
