Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge presented its 2019 Rising Star Award to organizers of Smith Mountain Lake’s Drinks and Links organizing committee on Tuesday, April 9.

The presentation took place at Mill Mountain Theatre as part of the Komen affiliate’s annual Circle of Hope event.

According to Catherine Warren, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge, the Rising Star Award is presented to a volunteer or volunteers who are new to Komen Virginia Blue Ridge, but have made a large impact in a short period of time.

More Than Pink Drinks & Links raised $30,000 at its inaugural fundraiser in August 2018 at The Waterfront Country Club. The event included food and drinks, live and silent auctions, live music, as well as a one-of-a-kind raffle that culminated with an exciting golf ball drop on the putting green.

“We are so excited to honor the More Than Pink Drinks and Links Committee with our Rising Star Award,” Warren said. “This extraordinary group of volunteers has shown an incredible dedication to our mission to end breast cancer and we cannot wait to see what they do in the future.”

Committee chairman Melanie Wheeler says plans are already in the works to make this year’s Drinks & Links event even more successful.

“In addition to the Pink Party and Auction on Aug. 3, we’re adding an 18-hole golf tournament on Monday, Aug. 5 at The Waterfront,” Wheeler said. “We were so encouraged by last year’s support that we wanted to get even more people involved and, hopefully, raise even more funds for the important work Komen does.”
