Several southwest, central Virginia schools announce closures, delays, and bus cancellations for Wednesday

(WFXR) — Whether due to the wintry conditions or employee absences, various school districts around southwest and central Virginia have decided to call off classes, start the school day late, and/or cancel bus routes for Wednesday.

Here is a list of the school closures, delays, and bus cancellations around the region as of 6:12 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5:

Amherst County:

Amherst County Public Schools will delay operations by two hours for Wednesday due to inclement weather concerns.

Appomattox County:

Appomattox County Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday.

Bedford County:

Bedford County Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for Wednesday because of concerns about secondary roads and black ice in the morning.
In addition, due to numerous bus driver absences caused by illness, the district says the following buses will not operate on Wednesday:

  • Bus 122: Morning and afternoon runs for Boonsboro Elementary School
  • Bus 42: Morning and afternoon runs for Forest Middle School and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 86: Morning and afternoon runs for Goodview Elementary School, Staunton River Middle School, and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 162: Morning runs for Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Forest Middle School, and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 167: Morning and afternoon runs for Forest Middle School and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 193: Morning and afternoon runs for Stewartsville Elementary School, Staunton River Middle School, and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 207: Morning and afternoon runs for Staunton River Middle School and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 182: Morning and afternoon routes for New London Academy, Forest Middle School, and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 213: Morning and afternoon routes for Forest Middle School and Jefferson Forest High School

Botetourt County:

While Botetourt County Public Schools has not announced any school delays or closures, the district says buses 14 and 49 have been canceled for Wednesday, which affects Colonial Elementary School, Troutville Elementary School, Read Mountain Middle School, and Lord Botetourt High School.
If you cannot arrange for alternate transportation for your student(s), you are asked to notify the school(s) so they will not be marked absent.

Buena Vista:

Buena Vista City Public Schools will proceed under a two-hour delay on Wednesday because of icy conditions.

Campbell County:

Campbell County Public Schools will delay operations by two hours on Wednesday.

Carroll County:

Carroll County Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for Wednesday.

Floyd County:

Floyd County Public Schools will hold a teacher workday on Wednesday before students return to school on Thursday, Jan. 6.

Giles County:

Giles County Public Schools will delay operations by two hours on Wednesday.

Grayson County:

Grayson County Public Schools will open two hours late on Wednesday. In addition, there will not be any bus service on York Ridge Road.

Halifax County:

Halifax County Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday because of road conditions. However, all 12-month employees are asked to report to work by 9 a.m.

Henry County:

Henry County Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for Wednesday.

Lynchburg:

Lynchburg City Schools will delay operations by two hours on Wednesday, but all schools will end at the normal dismissal times. Wednesday’s student schedule is listed below:

  • 9:25 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. for high school students
  • 10:10 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. for middle school students
  • 10:55 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. for elementary school students

Liberty Christian Academy and the Early Learning Center will also operate on a two-hour delay for Wednesday. The Early Room will open at 9 a.m. for students who are already registered, the Early Learning Center will start at 10 a.m., and Liberty Christian Academy Classes will start at 10:15 a.m.

Martinsville:

Martinsville City Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for Wednesday.

Nelson County:

Nelson County Public Schools will be closed for students and not offer after-school activities on Wednesday because of the weather.
Meanwhile, teachers and 11-month employees will have another work-from-home day on Wednesday, but they can use the buildings from noon to 4 p.m. if they want.
As for 12-month employees, they should report to work at noon.
