UPDATE: Schools and facilities close, modify hours in southwest and central Virginia for Thursday, Friday amid winter weather concerns

(WFXR) — Concerns about winter weather, travel conditions, and employee absences continue to cause cancellations and scheduling changes for schools and organizations across southwest and central Virginia.

Here is a list of schools, government-run facilities, and businesses around the region that have announced closures, delayed openings, early dismissals, and/or bus route cancellations as of 5:51 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6:

Alleghany County:

Alleghany County offices will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday because of weather concerns.

Appomattox County:

Appomattox County Public Schools will be delayed by one hour on Thursday.

Bedford County:

Bedford County Public Schools plans to operate on a regular schedule on Thursday, but because of illness, the district is still dealing with a significant number of bus driver absences.
School officials say the following buses will not operate Thursday:

  • Bus 42: Morning and afternoon runs for Forest Middle School and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 86: Morning and afternoon runs for Goodview Elementary School, Staunton River Middle School, and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 162: Morning runs for Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Forest Middle School, and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 167: Morning and afternoon runs for Forest Middle School and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 193: Morning and afternoon runs for Stewartsville Elementary School, Staunton River Middle School, and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 207: Morning and afternoon runs for Staunton River Middle School and Staunton River High School

Bedford County Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for Friday because of the high probability of precipitation and cold temperatures overnight.
School officials say the following buses will not operate Friday due to bus driver absences from illness:

  • Bus 21: Morning and afternoon runs for Boonsboro Elementary School, Forest Middle School, and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 86: Morning and afternoon runs for Goodview Elementary School, Staunton River Middle School, and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 131: Morning and afternoon runs for Boonsboro Elementary School, Forest Middle School, and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 162: Morning runs for Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Forest Middle School, and Jefferson Forest High School
  • Bus 171: Morning and afternoon runs for Huddleston Elementary School, Staunton River Middle School, and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 193: Morning and afternoon runs for Stewartsville Elementary School, Staunton River Middle School, and Staunton River High School
  • Bus 207: Morning and afternoon runs for Staunton River Middle School and Staunton River High School

Centra Medical Group Bedford and Centra Urgent Care Forest will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Bland County:

Bland County Public Schools will dismiss two hours early on Thursday because of the weather forecast.

Botetourt County:

UPDATE: Botetourt County Public Schools has canceled all afterschool games for Thursday. In addition, all extracurricular activities and practices will end by 6 p.m., and all buildings will be closed by 7 p.m.
However, Thursday night’s school board meeting will be held as planned.
Meanwhile, bus 17 has been canceled for Thursday. This affects Colonial Elementary School, Read Mountain Middle School, and Lord Botetourt High Schools, but not the transfer shuttles.

Campbell County:

Centra Medical Group in Altavista and Brookneal will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Carroll County:

Carroll County Public Schools has canceled all afterschool activities for Thursday.

Carroll County Public Schools will also be closed on Friday, but there will be remote instruction.

Charlotte County:

Charlotte County Public Schools will delay operations by two hours Thursday because of the potential for black ice in the morning.

Covington:

Covington City Hall will not open until 11 a.m. on Friday because of hazardous travel and weather conditions.

Danville:

CMG Primary Care East, CMG Specialty Care, and CMG Urgent Care in Danville will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Floyd County:

The Floyd County administration office will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Franklin County:

Franklin County High Schools has canceled all evening activities for Thursday because of the impending weather.

Galax:

Galax city offices will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday.

Grayson County:

Grayson County Public Schools will start at the regular time Thursday morning, but schools will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. due to the weather forecast. In addition, there will not be any afterschool activities.

Grayson County administrative offices will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday.

Henry County:

The Henry-Martinsville Department of Social Services will close its office and employees will work remotely on Friday because of the inclement weather forecast.

Highland County:

Highland County Public Schools will be closed for in-person learning, but still conduct remote learning on Friday, Jan. 7.

Lexington:

The Lexington Health Department’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic will not open until 1 p.m. on Friday.

Lynchburg:

Centra Medical Group and CMG Piedmont Psychiatric Center in Lynchburg will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Randolph College is also set to open at 7 a.m. on Friday due to inclement weather.

The Central Virginia Health District says it has canceled Friday’s COVID-19 testing event at the Centra Dawson Inn because the potential for winter weather could cause problems for the partners involved in the testing and delivery of supplies who were set to come in from different parts of Virginia.

Montgomery County:

Montgomery County Public Schools will have an inclement weather day (Code B, work-from-home day). Students are asked to check Google Classroom for their assignments.

Nelson County:

Nelson County Public Schools will be closed for students on Thursday because of ongoing power outages, downed trees, and downed power lines.
Teachers and 11-month employees will have another work-from-home day, but if they want, they can use the buildings from noon to 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, 12-month employees are asked to report to work at noon.

Nelson County Public Schools will also be closed for students and will not have afterschool activities on Friday due to power outages and impending weather. Essential personnel are asked to report at 10 a.m.

In addition. all Blue Ridge Health District offices, including the one in Nelson County, will open at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday due to hazardous conditions.

Pulaski County:

Pulaski County Public Schools has canceled all afterschool activities for Thursday.

In addition, Pulaski County Public Schools will be closed (Code 0) on Friday, with no virtual learning.

Pulaski County Parks and Rec has also canceled all basketball and volleyball games taking place Thursday night due to the inclement weather forecast.

Radford:

The Radford Library and the Radford Recreation Department will both close at 6 p.m. on Thursday, but the library will open at noon and the recreation department will open at 7:30 a.m. on Friday.

Roanoke City:

Roanoke City Public Schools, all afternoon and evening activities are canceled for Thursday because of the impending weather, including 21st Century After School programming, practices, games, science fairs, etc.

In addition, the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts say the Valley View Community Vaccination Center will be closed on Friday due to winter weather concerns.

Rockbridge County:

The Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization has canceled all activities and practices for Thursday night because of the impending weather for the afternoon and evening.

Wythe County:

Wythe County Public Schools will dismiss one hour early — at approximately 2:15 p.m. — on Thursday.

At George Wythe High School, all school activities, practices, and games have been canceled.

Wytheville Community College will close at 3 p.m. for all students and staff on Thursday due to the inclement weather forecast. In addition, the TEAS testing scheduled for 1 p.m. is canceled.
