SARA Roanoke breaks ground on expansion

Local News

A local sexual assault crisis center has officially broken ground on an expansion set to double the size of its facility.

Sexual Assault Response and Awareness, Inc., or SARA, Roanoke, is doubling the size of its staff and adding at least 800 square feet of office space.

Organization leaders say the demand for their services goes up slightly each year, and the organization has operated at capacity for a while.

They say the new addition is important since SARA is the only sexual assault crisis center in Roanoke providing 24-hour crisis intervention.

“Many sexual assault survivors never tell anybody about their experiences, and we want people to know that we are here for them and that we are available and will help them go through this process,” said Teresa Berry, executive director of SARA Roanoke.

SARA will host a benefit night on Saturday at Soaring Ridge Craft Brewery to help pay the expansion. Organizers say $1 of every pint of beer sold from 5 to 9 p.m. will be donated to SARA.
