Rocky Mount Elementary teacher is a finalist for 2021 Virginia Teacher of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) – On Friday, eight teachers from across Virginia learned they have been selected as a finalist for the 2021 Virginia Teacher of the Year.

Each of the eight teachers represents their own region as a Regional Teacher of the Year. One of those eight teachers will be the Virginia Teacher of the Year in a special virtual ceremony next month.

Anthony Swann, a fifth-grade teacher at Rocky Mount Elementary School in Franklin County represents Region 6.

The full list of Regional Teachers of the Year include:

  • Sarah F. Jurewicz, Culinary Arts teacher at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center in Chesterfield County (Region 1).
  • Alisa T. Smith, Spanish teacher at Jamestown High School in Williamsburg-James City County (Region 2)
  • Kimberly G. Cannon, U.S. History teacher at Stafford Middle School in Stafford County (Region 3)
  • Lisa M. Rode, sixth-grade teacher at Kings Glen Elementary School in Fairfax County (Region 4)
  • Lisa. S. Cooper, first-grade teacher at Bessie Weller Elementary School in Staunton (Region 5)
  • Anthony Swann, fifth-grade teacher at Rocky Mount Elementary School in Franklin County (Region 6)
  • Sarah M. Biggs, first and second-grade reading teacher at High Point Elementary School in Washington County (Region 7)
  • Victory S. Soyars, Geometry teacher at Park View High School in Mecklenburg County (Region 8)

The teachers were selected as candidates who were nominated by school divisions in each of the state’s eight superintendents regions.

All candidates submitted portfolios that highlighted their accomplishments, educational philosophies and community activities.

A panel, which included teachers and representatives of professional and educational associations, higher education, and the business community reviewed the portfolios and selected these eight regional teachers of the year.

The decision as to which of the eight Regional Teachers of the Year will be the 2021 Virginia Teacher of the Year will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 8 during a virtual ceremony.
