ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — If you missed the time to plant your seeds this year, you’re in luck because a southeast Roanoke kid with a green thumb has a solution.

Jake Campbell may only be eight years old, but he already knows what he wants to be when he grows up.

“I wanna be a farmer,” Jake told WFXR News.

When Jake told his parents about his dream job, they knew they had to help.

“Him and his dad came up with the idea, like, ‘why don’t we practice what you wanna do in the future?'” said Keriann Campbell, Jake’s mother.

Since September 2021, Jake and his family have been planning for the growing season.

“They’ve been looking for their seeds and they were looking for the perfect greenhouse and they started germinating seeds in March,” said Keriann.

Now, Jake’s garden grows a variety of plants, from tomatoes to peppers, all lined in a row.

In fact, with some help from Jake’s seedling business, your garden can also look like his.

“You can buy them and then put ’em in the ground and you can have your own garden,” Keriann said.

“If we’re growing plants, I guess we get, like, free food,” added Jake.

Since establishing his own business and selling his trans-plants, Jake has some lofty goals.

“When I grow up, I might buy a golden four-by-four car,” said Jake.

However, keeping his garden green can be a tough job.

“The hardest part is, like, working in the sun,” Jake said. “It’s so hot.”

With his hands in dirt and his face in the sun, anyone can see that Jake’s fun-loving heart is one with his garden.

According to Jake, he plans to grow the business even more next year by growing extra produce and getting a bigger greenhouse.
