ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Authorities are working to identify the remains of a wrong-way driver whose car went up in flames following a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer on I-81 North in Rockbridge County Thursday night.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash took place at mile marker 178.2 on I-81 North at approximately 11:08 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27.

Officials say a 2010 Honda Accord was traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-81 when it was hit head-on by a 2021 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was traveling north. The Honda then caught on fire.

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured in the crash, but the driver of the Honda reportedly died at the scene.

Police say the Honda driver’s remains have been sent to the Western Office of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science for identification.

As of Friday, Jan. 28, this deadly crash is still under investigation, according to authorities.
