ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Wildlife Center of Virginia says a rescuer found an adult woodchuck with 10 young opossums on its back earlier this week in Rockbridge County.

Officials say the woman was able to collect the woodchuck and all 10 baby opossums, put them in a crate, and brought the unusual find to the Wildlife Center of Virginia.

The little opossums were safely removed from the woodchuck. However, while the opossums were all healthy, the woodchuck was said to have been suffering from many severe neurologic issues including seizures; a head tilt; and ataxia, which is a loss of full control of body movements.

After several unsuccessful attempts to stabilize the woodchuck, the veterinary team determined it was in the best interest of the woodchuck to euthanize it.

According to the Wildlife Center of Virginia, “woodchucks are a high-risk rabies species in Virginia, and severe neurologic signs were of particular concern.”

The wildlife center says the 10 opossums will be closely watched during the course of the next several days.
