UPDATE 9:28 a.m.: After the smell of smoke prompted an evacuation at William Byrd High School, Roanoke County school officials say first responders have cleared the school, which means students and staff are returning to the building to resume their classes.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Students and staff members at William Byrd High School are currently evacuating the building and moving to the middle school due to the smell of smoke, Roanoke County school officials say.

According to Roanoke County Public Schools, this is simply a precautionary measure and urge parents not to come to the school.

Roanoke County Fire and Rescue crews are currently responding to the campus, which has limited access at this time.

This is a developing story.
