ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Western Virginia Regional Jail confirmed Friday morning that an inmate died overnight after being hospitalized in Roanoke for a medical emergency.

According to the jail, 32-year-old inmate Lisa Mariel Lemond was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital to be treated for an undetermined illness on Thursday, July 22. Lemond was reportedly alert and responsive during this transport.

Officials say Lemond was treated at Roanoke Memorial throughout the night, but was later pronounced dead at approximately 12:08 a.m. on Friday, July 23.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke is set perform an autopsy. Meanwhile, the Roanoke County Police Department is investigating Lamond’s death according to normal protocol, authorities say.

“All information at this point indicates this death was due to natural causes, with no involvement of COVID-19,” the Western Virginia Regional Jail said in a statement on Friday.

Lemond was reportedly committed to the jail on July 2 and was awaiting a supervision revocation hearing in Roanoke County Circuit Court.
