ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Usually 80 to 100 people meet up at Big Lick Brewing Co. on Tuesday evenings for a weekly pub run in downtown Roanoke with Fleet Feet. For the month of July, though, Fleet Feet is hosting a raffle to benefit the Back-to-School Shoes Project.

Donors can purchase a $30 raffle ticket to enter to win one of the following five prizes:

  • A pair of Brooks Running shoes and an outfit
  • A pair of New Balance shoes and an outfit
  • A pair of ON shoes and an outfit
  • A Pair of Kahru shoes
  • A gift card to Big Lick Brewing Co and a Big Lick Brewing Co T-shirt

The Back to School Shoes Project is an initiative of Project Forward, a nonprofit started by the owners of Fleet Feet Roanoke, Robin and Blaine Lewis.

Organizers say the goal of the Back to School Shoes Project is to provide new socks and shoes to Roanoke City Public Schools students at the Back to School Extravaganza, which will be held on Aug. 21 at William Fleming High School. This event will provide families with necessary school supplies, backpacks, and more.

According to the data from the Virginia Department of Education, Roanoke City Public Schools has more than 14,000 students, but 8,000 of them identify as economically disadvantaged.

As of Tuesday, July 13, Project Forward has raised $64,000. However, that means $176,000 still needs to be raised to meet the goal of providing new shoes and socks to every Roanoke public school student with a need.

“We are passionate about creating ways to raise money for local nonprofits. When COVID hit we knew we had to do a whole lot more. It is our goal to fit every Youth who are under-resourced in Roanoke with shoes,” stated Robin Lewis, owner of Fleet Feet and Project Forward.

Organizers say a donation of just $30 provides a pair of brand new, name brand shoes and socks for one student.

You can either provide a cash or check donation to Project Forward at Fleet Feet or mail a check to Project Forward c/o Fleet Feet 4347 Franklin Road, Roanoke, VA 24018. You can also donate online on the Fleet Feet Project Forward page or via PayPal.
