VSP: 6-year-old among the three killed after car found in campground lake in Rockbridge County

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police is revealing new information about the three people who died after their car was found upside down in a lake in Rockbridge County on Tuesday.

The investigation revealed the three people were leaving the campground between 11 and 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16 in a Toyota sedan.

Police say the car headed towards Route 39 when it ran off the right side of the road. It then overturned several times down a steep embankment before landing upside down in the lake.

When troopers arrived, they found the car submerged in the lake.

According to officials, 27-year-old Samantha N. Day of Goshen, 38-year-old Michael D. Bennett of Goshen, and a 6-year-old boy were pulled from the lake. All three people inside the car were pronounced dead.

Authorities say there was no criminal activity and the incident remains under investigation. The Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office helped with the search efforts.
