VINTON, Va. (WFXR) — Cody Sexton was named as the new Assistant Town Manager for Vinton on Tuesday after a comprehensive search process by town officials following the promotion of Richard “Pete” Peters to Town Manager.
In his position, the Town of Vinton says Sexton will assist in the overall management of the day-to-day operations of the government, as well as work with the mayor, councilmembers, and the town manager to implement their strategic vision for the community.
“Vinton is truly a special place and is quickly becoming one of the best places to enjoy every aspect of the high quality of life we have come to love in the Roanoke Valley,” said Sexton. “I am excited to work with elected officials and a talented staff who have such enthusiasm to improve the lives of the residents, businesses, and visitors.”
Sexton most recently served as the Assistant to the County Administrator in Botetourt County.
In his seven years with Botetourt County, officials say he served on the county’s Executive Leadership Team, was the primary media contact and general spokesperson for the county, coordinated transportation planning and projects at both the local and regional levels, provided staff support to numerous commissions and committees, provided leadership to the county’s annual budgeting process, oversaw Central Garage operations and the security/reception staff for the county’s Administration Center, and led and worked on projects that touched nearly every aspect of Botetourt County’s government.
Before coming to Botetourt County, Sexton reportedly worked as an analyst for Stafford County in northern Virginia.
“The Town was pleased to have attracted a very impressive pool of over 30 candidates with interest in the position. Mr. Sexton emerged as the top candidate after a thorough interview process that involved the Town’s entire eight-member Leadership Team,” stated Town Manager, Pete Peters. “Cody’s knowledge and experience in local government management and his passion for public service were key factors in him being selected and we are very excited to have him join our team.”
Outside of his local government experience, officials say Sexton holds a Master of Public Administration degree and a Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management from Virginia Tech, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree from Roanoke College, where he also serves as a lecturer in the Department of Public Affairs.
Furthermore, Sexton is active in the Virginia Local Government Management Association (VLGMA) and serves on the Communications and Networking Committee, according to the Town of Vinton.
“Local government is where the rubber meets the road in our democracy,” said Sexton. “I believe this work is a calling, and we have been entrusted by our communities to work hard and to provide the highest levels of service to our people. My goal is to infuse that passion for service into all I do for the Town.”
Sexton is set to assume his role as assistant town manager on May 3.
