ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A crash involving a vehicle in a lake on private campground property in Rockbridge County has claimed the life of a yet-to-be-identified man, woman, and child.
State Police say they were notified about a vehicle in a lake shortly after noon on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at a private campground located off Route 39/Maury River Road.
As the investigation into the situation moved forward, troopers found out that a Toyota sedan and its three occupants were last seen leaving the campground between 11 and 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16.
Police say the Toyota traveled just over a quarter mile from the campground toward Route 39 when it ran off the right side of the road, overturned multiple times down a steep embankment, and came to rest upside down in the lake.
The vehicle was said to be completely submerged except for the bottom of the tires.
A woman and a boy were recovered from the vehicle while a man was recovered from the lake.
VSP says that no criminal activity is suspected at this time, so the incident is being investigated as a traffic crash.
The Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office assisted with search efforts.
The victims have not yet been identified as State Police are working to notify the next of kin.
