UPDATE 5:35 p.m.: Traffic is moving normally with minimal backups from an earlier vehicle fire on I-81 north near mile marker 169.
UPDATE 4:55 p.m.: Both northbound lanes of I-81 have reopened after a vehicle fire temporarily shut down these lanes.
The image below shows the vehicle that appears to be completely burned out still on the right shoulder near mile marker 169.
Traffic is still reported to be backed up a few miles, but vehicles are moving.
UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: While the vehicle fire is out, backups behind the incident continue to mount. Backups are now reported to be approximately four miles behind the incident on I-81 north near Buchanan at mile marker 169.
VDOT says the left lane is open to traffic, but vehicles are moving slowly past the incident.
Drivers should consider finding another route as cleanup efforts continue.
UPDATE 4:15 p.m.: The fire has been extinguished and one lane of travel has reopened; however, backups are reported to be approximately three miles.
BUCHANAN, Va. (WFXR) – A vehicle fire has shut down all lanes of I-81 north near Buchanan.
The incident is taking place at mile marker 169.
Drivers are asked to avoid this area.
