UPDATE: I-81 South back open after vehicle fire closed lanes in Botetourt County

UPDATE 7:45 p.m.: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has cleared a vehicle fire that caused headaches for drivers on Interstate 81 South in Botetourt County.

VDOT says it happened at mile marker 166 on I-81 South. It’s not clear what caused the vehicle fire.


UPDATE 7:12 p.m.: Drivers are experiencing a five-mile back up on Interstate 81 due to a vehicle fire in Botetourt County, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

VDOT says the vehicle caught fire and caused traffic headaches for drivers on Tuesday afternoon. It happened at mile marker 166 on I-81. Crews are still working to get the interstate cleared.


UPDATE 6:20 p.m.: Drivers are now experiencing a seven-mile back up on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

VDOT says no lanes are closed on I-81 at mile marker 166. VDOT is working to clear a vehicle fire.

They have put a detour in place to help move traffic off the interstate at Exit 168.


UPDATE 5:37 p.m.: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has put a detour into place after a vehicle fire has caused delays on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County.

VDOT says that traffic is being detoured off at the 168 Exit.

The incident happened at mile marker 166 and has closed down all south lanes.
