Hospital COVID-19 capacity at 85% in Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Currently, 78 people are in hospitals in the Roanoke City Alleghany Health Districts, and that’s of nearly 350 active cases.

“The trend is not unexpected, but it is devastating, nonetheless,” said Dr. Cynthia Morrow with the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts.

During his visit to Roanoke on Tuesday, Oct. 27, Gov. Ralph Northam said rising hospital capacity is something his administration is monitoring alongside health officials.

Southwest Virginia’s positivity rate is currently at 8%, which is above the Commonwealth’s average of 5%.

“If we can keep the numbers down below 5%, then we can talk about getting our students back into school safely, getting our businesses back up and running, but we’ve got to continue to be vigilant, working together and being part of the solution,” Northam said.

“This virus is tireless,” said Dr. Molly O’Dell, Director of Communicable Diseases for the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts. “Our behaviors are either going to encourage the spread of the virus or going to discourage the spread of the virus.”

Hospitals like Carilion in Roanoke and Centra in Lynchburg acknowledge the rising cases and say they’re currently working to increase their space, in anticipation of more patients.

As we heard this morning, the Virginia Department of health is reporting increased community spread in southwest Virginia. Our region is experiencing the highest number of Covid-19 hospitalizations to date. Carilion has the bandwidth and capacity for a surge, but one preventable case – one preventable death – that’s too many. As a community, we have the power to control and prevent the spread. Wear a mask, practice social distancing (stay at least six feet away from others), wash your hands and get your flu shot.

Northam wants to reassure Virginians that if someone tests positive with COVID-19, they’ll be able to receive the care they need in the Commonwealth.
