UPDATE 2:50 p.m. (10/1/21): Police have identified the victim in Wednesday night’s fatal shooting at a northwest Roanoke convenience store.
According to the Roanoke Police Department, Basil Hubble, a 31-year-old Roanoke man, was shot at a store off 6th Street and Moorman Avenue NW at approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. That man was pronounced dead at the scene by Roanoke Fire-EMS.
This news comes the day after the department announced that 20-year-old Jamerius Crennell of Roanoke had been taken into custody for second-degree murder in connection with the homicide investigation.
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A young man is in custody and facing murder charges following a homicide in the northwestern part of Roanoke Wednesday night, police say.
According to the Roanoke Police Department, at approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, an officer
was patrolling in the area of 6th Street and Moorman Avenue NW.
“Roanoke Police analysts have identified this area as one that has shown a recent increase of violent crime,” the department said in a statement on Thursday, Sept. 30. “Roanoke Police direct targeted enforcement to these areas when possible in an attempt to interrupt acts of violence or organized crime.”
As the officer passed one of the convenience stores on Moorman Avenue, police say he noticed a person enter the store. The officer then parked his vehicle across the street from the store, but seconds later, he heard gunshots coming from inside the business and observed someone trying to run away from the store.
Officers reportedly took the individual into custody and found a gun and cash in his possession.
According to police, a man inside the store had been shot and was pronounced dead on the scene by Roanoke Fire-EMS. His identity will not be released after his next-of-kin is properly notified.
Meanwhile, authorities say 20-year-old Jamerius Crennell of Roanoke, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with this ongoing homicide investigation.
