ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke authorities are investigating after two unloaded firearms were discovered at Westside Elementary School on Tuesday.
According to Roanoke City Public Schools, Westside Elementary received a report about a weapon on school property on Tuesday, May 17. The administration and the school resource officer quickly recovered and secured two unloaded firearms.
School officials say they are cooperating with the Roanoke Police Department and the Roanoke Sheriff’s Office during their investigation.
“For students who need to talk with someone, counseling is available,” Roanoke City Public Schools said. “Instruction and testing are continuing, and dismissal will occur this afternoon as normally scheduled at 2:15 p.m.”
The district told WFXR News that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.
WFXR News spoke with a parent on Tuesday who says it was disheartening to drive up to her child’s school and see law enforcement cars outside.
“It’s a very helpless feeling when you get that type of information and you’re the last to know,” said Gabriela Medel, the mother of a Westside Elementary student. “I seriously doubt that he will return to Westside. I personally believe that I’m able to provide him a better educational experience through homeschooling.”
This is a developing story.
