UPDATE 5:07 p.m.: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is reporting that all crashes on Interstate 81 have been cleared.

Crews were busy trying to clear crashes on both southbound and northbound I-81 in Roanoke County.

UPDATE 4:22 p.m.: Both southbound and northbound motorists on I-81 are now dealing with delays after two more crashes took place in Roanoke County.

According to VDOT, only the southbound right shoulder is closed at mile marker 132 because of a vehicle crash.

However, due to a tractor-trailer crash at mile marker 133.7 on I-81, the southbound left shoulder, left lane, and right lane are currently closed.

VDOT has yet to provide an estimate of the delays from either crash, but southbound traffic is moving slowly between mile marker 133.7 and mile marker 144.6

Meanwhile, VDOT’s online traffic map still shows significant delays between mile marker 129.7 and mile marker 144 on I-81 North, even though both of the northbound crashes in Roanoke County were cleared between 3:30 and 3:45 p.m.

UPDATE 3:55 p.m.: Roanoke County school officials warned parents in the Glenvar area that school buses may run late Friday afternoon because of the two crashes that caused miles of delays on I-81 North.

According to VDOT, all northbound lanes have been reopened at the scene of the multi-vehicle crash at mile marker 143.6 and the scene of the tractor-trailer crash at mile marker 142.7 on I-81.

However, traffic cameras along I-81 North still show traffic lagging as far back as mile marker 132.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Traffic cameras are showing miles of backups along I-81 North after two crashes in Roanoke County Friday afternoon.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the northbound left shoulder and left lane are closed at mile marker 143.6 on I-81 because of a multi-vehicle crash.

While there are no official reports of delays from this crash, traffic cameras show motorists bumper-to-bumper and barely moving at mile marker 143.

In addition, VDOT says a tractor-trailer crash at mile marker 142.7 has closed down the northbound right shoulder and backed up traffic for about two miles on I-81.

Meanwhile, the department’s online traffic map shows significantly slowed traffic along I-81 North as far away as mile marker 137.

This is a developing story.
