VDOT says backups, starting at the location of the incident at mile marker 142 in Roanoke County have reduced to approximately three-and-a-half miles.
Drivers can still expect delays as congestion continues to thin out, even though the crash scene has been cleared.
UPDATE 4:10 p.m.: A vehicle fire continues to snarl traffic on I-81 south in Roanoke County.
According to VDOT, backups are approximately eight miles behind the incident, which is located at mile marker 142.
The latest update indicates that the southbound right shoulder is still closed, but the two main travel lanes are open.
Drivers can continue to expect significant delays in this area.
UPDATE 2:45 p.m.: VDOT has updated the information about the vehicle fire on I-81 south, at mile marker 142 in Roanoke County.
One lane is open; however, the southbound right lane and right shoulder are still closed.
Backups are reported at approximately 5.5 miles.
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Southbound traffic on I-81 in Roanoke County is backed up for several miles due to a tractor-trailer fire Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), all southbound lanes are closed at mile marker 142 on I-81 because of the fire.
Roanoke County traffic is currently delayed for 2.5 miles along I-81 South, VDOT says.
