UPDATE: I-81 South reopened after tractor-trailer overturns in Roanoke County, backs up traffic for miles

UPDATE 12:44 p.m.: VDOT says crews have reopened both travel lanes of I-81 South after a tractor-trailer overturned in Roanoke County Friday morning, but traffic is still backed up for miles.

As of this writing, VDOT’s online traffic map says the southbound right shoulder is still closed at mile marker 138.1 of I-81 South, with approximately six and a half miles of backups.

UPDATE 10:28 a.m.: Roanoke County motorists are now backed up for five miles because of an overturned tractor-trailer on I-81 that is blocking all southbound lanes.

VDOT asks drivers to use either exit 141 or exit 140 to find an alternate route around this crash.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — In Roanoke County, I-81 South is completely blocked off and traffic is backed up for miles Friday morning because of a tractor-trailer crash.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) says all southbound lanes are closed at mile marker 138 on I-81.

According to VDOT, traffic is currently backed up for three miles along I-81 South.
