UPDATE (FINAL) 9:30 p.m.: Backups have cleared up on I-81 south around mile marker 136 from an earlier tractor-trailer crash.
VDOT says traffic is again moving normally around this area.
UPDATE 8:50 p.m.: VDOT says the tractor-trailer crash at mile marker 136 of I-81 south has been cleared; however, backups continue.
Over the last 30 minutes, backups have reduced to less than six miles from the previous report of eight miles.
It will still take some time to clear out the congestion, but all lanes have reopened in this area.
UPDATE 8:20 p.m.: Crash cleanup continues in the area of mile marker 136 along I-81 south in Roanoke County.
VDOT continues to indicate significant backups, even as one lane of travel remains open.
VDOT says backups are eight miles behind the crash as the left shoulder and left lanes are still closed on I-81 south at the tractor-trailer crash site.
UPDATE 6:05 p.m.: Backups continue to increase behind a tractor-trailer crash on I-81 south in Roanoke County.
VDOT says that traffic is backed up approximately seven miles from the crash location at mile marker 136, so drivers coming up to the Lafayette area can expect to be coming to stop-and-go traffic.
The left shoulder and left lane are both closed at mile marker 136.
UPDATE 5:45 p.m.: VDOT is saying that backups have increased to approximately three miles behind a crash on I-81 south at mile marker 136 in Roanoke County.
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A tractor-trailer crash is slowing commuter traffic on I-81 south in Roanoke County.
According to VDOT, the crash is located at mile marker 136 and has shut down the left shoulder and left lane on the southbound side near Glenvar.
This is a separate crash from the earlier multi-vehicle crash that occurred earlier in the northbound lanes a few miles away.
Drivers are urged to find another route around this crash.
Backups are reported to be approximately two miles.
