UPDATE 11:18 a.m.: VDOT says all southbound lanes are back open at mile marker 158 on I-81 following Thursday morning’s multi-vehicle crash.
However, officials are reporting seven miles of congestion from exit 162, which was set up as a detour after the crash initially blocked all southbound lanes at mile marker 158.
UPDATE 10:38 a.m.: Troutville fire officials shared additional information about the eight-vehicle crash that blocked off I-81 South in Botetourt County Thursday morning.
According to the Troutville Volunteer Fire Department, one tractor-trailer’s saddle tank was ruptured and run through by approximately 150 feet of guardrail. However, the lack of cargo in the tractor-trailers helped to reduce cleanup time.
Two people were brought to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, but fire officials say no turkeys or livestock were injured.
The department says the shoulder of the interstate was cleared off at 9:20 a.m., allowing traffic stuck between mile markers 158 and 162 to flow through the rest area.
In addition, while VDOT says there are no delays from the scene of the crash at mile marker 158 on I-81 South, there are reportedly six miles of congestion from the detour site at exit 162 as of 10:19 a.m.
UPDATE 9:08 a.m.: Botetourt County Department of Fire and EMS says crews are still on the scene of the crash at the I-81 South rest area in order to clean up the vehicles, tractor-trailers, debris, and diesel fuel across the roadway.
UPDATE 8:36 a.m.: The Troutville Volunteer Fire Department told WFXR News that Thursday morning’s crash along I-81 South involved four tractor-trailers and four vehicles.

In addition, I-81 South will reportedly remain closed for an extended time. Meanwhile, VDOT says there is a detour in place at exit 162, but there is currently two miles of congestion from the detour site.
UPDATE 8:11 a.m.: With Botetourt County traffic already backed up for at least two miles after a tractor-trailer crash closed down I-81 South at mile marker 158, VDOT says motorists can use exit 162 to detour onto Route 11.
According to Virginia State Police, the initial call about the crash came in at approximately 7:23 a.m. on Thursday. State troopers and members of several other law enforcement and emergency response agencies are on the scene at this time.
