UPDATE: Tractor-trailer crash cleared on I-81 south in Roanoke County; issues continue in construction just past the I-81/I-581 split

UPDATE 11:15 p.m.: One tractor-trailer crash on I-81 has been cleared.

The crash at the I-81/I-581 split heading south is no longer an issue; however, construction just ahead of the earlier crash continues to plague drivers.

Backups of three miles are still being reported behind the construction which begins at mile marker 142.6 on the southbound side of I-81 in Roanoke County.

Also, the tractor-trailer crash in Wythe County continues to close the left shoulder and left lane of I-81 northbound at mile marker 73.3.

Lastly, the vehicle fire in Botetourt County, also along I-81, has been cleared. Exit 156 has also reopened.


UPDATE 10:50 p.m.: Issues continue for drivers along various sections of I-81.

  • A tractor-trailer crash has closed the northbound left shoulder and left lane at mile marker 73.3 near Wytheville.

  • Three mile backlogs continue on I-81 south due to construction activities between mile marker 142.6 and 141.
  • A tractor-trailer crash has closed the southbound left lane of I-81 at mile marker 144.2, near the split with I-581. This incident along with construction activities just beyond this crash are creating stop-and-go traffic.
  • A vehicle fire has closed the exit ramp of I-81 south at exit 156. Drivers can exit I-81 at Route 220 and can use Route 11 north to travel back up to catch the exit of 156 (Brughs Mill Road).

UPDATE 10:25 p.m.: Backups have thinned out behind a vehicle fire in Botetourt County. The right shoulder and exit ramp are still closed at mile marker 156.

The other incidents continue with little change.

  • Tractor-trailer crash on I-81 south near the split with I-581. The left lane and left shoulder are closed.
  • Construction causing congestion just south of the previously-listed tractor trailer crash near the I-581 split. Three mile backlogs are reported.
  • Tractor-trailer crash on I-81 north at mile marker 73.3 near Wytheville. The left lane left shoulder are closed.

UPDATE 9:35 p.m.: An earlier vehicle fire is again causing issues on I-81 south in Botetourt County at mile marker 156.

Here, the southbound right shoulder and exit ramp are closed.

Backups here are said to be around 2.5 miles.


UPDATE 9:25 p.m.: A new tractor-trailer crash has been reported on I-81 in Wythe County.

VDOT says this crash is on the northbound side at mile marker 73.3 near Wytheville.

Here, the northbound left shoulder and left lane are closed.

In Roanoke County, a tractor-trailer crash near the I-81/I-581 split continues to slow traffic.

This crash is at mile marker 144.2. VDOT says the left lane and left shoulder are closed on the southbound side.

Just beyond this crash, construction activities continue to slow motorists. Construction begins just south of the I-81/I-581 split where the southbound left lane and left shoulder are closed. Backups behind this crash are said to be approximately three miles – near the location of the tractor-trailer crash further north.

Drivers can expect significant delays in this area.

A tractor-trailer crash is actively slowing traffic along a busy stretch of I-81, at the split with I-581 in Roanoke County.

According to VDOT, the crash is at mile marker 144.2 and is blocking the left shoulder and left lane.

The crash is just before construction activities which is also creating heavy traffic on the southbound side starting at mile marker 142.6.

Drivers can expect significant delays in this area.
