ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — If you’re thinking about adding a furry friend to the family, you’re in luck because WFXR News visited the Roanoke Valley SPCA to learn how to find that perfect pet.
WFXR News’ Hazelmarie Anderson spoke with Julie Rickmond, the marketing and communications director for the Roanoke Valley SPCA, about the shelter’s adoption counselors who work with people to find a pet that fit their lifestyle, their living arrangements, and their personality.
She also spent time with Katie Nichols and Emily Fugate, the feline and canine foster, intake, and enrichment counselors, respectively.
According to the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (ASPCA), more than 6 million animals enter animal shelters nationwide each year.
Be ready commit to a furry family member
Adding a new pet to the family takes a lot of time. Make sure you’ve thought through the amount of dedication needed for a successful transition.
The Roanoke Valley SPCA also has adoption counselors who will help you find a furry friend to fit your lifestyle, your living arrangements, your personality, etc.
Do your research
Make sure your home is pet friendly, so if you live in an apartment, research their policies regarding pet ownership.
Then, once you find that perfect pet, you need to do a little research about the animal. You need to know all there is about your prospective pet, as well as local veterinarians.
Consider the financial responsibility
If you’re thinking about getting a pet, keep in mind the financial responsibility of caring for an animal.
Owning a pet is a full time commitment, meaning you should budget their living cost, such as food, toys, medications, vaccinations, trips to the vet, grooming, etc.
