ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The sky over Green Hill Park will be filled with thousands of colorful kites on Saturday as an annual spring tradition for many families returns to Roanoke County — the Blue Ridge Kite Festival!
There’s nothing like flying a kite! No matter your age or level of experience with these colorful gliders, seeing them soaring in the air can bring a smile to anyone’s face!
According to Roanoke County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, the 21st annual Blue Ridge Kite Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 at Green Hill Park, rain or shine.
Between the high-flying demonstrations from the Richmond Air Force Kite Club, the kid-friendly activities and crafts, and the various vendors and food trucks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at this free, family-friendly festival.
In addition, organizers are introducing a new element to the festival — the Kite Contest and Showcase! The categories include the 50-yard dash, oldest and youngest fliers, most unusual kite, and biggest and smallest kite.
If you would like to participate in the Kite Showcase and Contest, you can click here and fill out the entry form, which also includes a list of criteria and a schedule for the various categories. You can also sign up on-site on Saturday.
There will also be free kite decorating and giveaways thanks to Freedom First Credit Union, as well as free t-shirts for kids from Friends of the Blue Ridge, all while supplies last. However, these free items are limited to one per child, who must be present at the event.
“Come out and enjoy a beautiful day at Green Hill Park and watch the skies brighten with the magnificent variety of kites, while you enjoy the many food vendors, craft and merchandise vendors as well as other fun activities on-site,” Roanoke County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism said.
