STATESVILLE, N.C. (WJZY) — A southwest Virginia man died Tuesday afternoon after his SUV ran off I-40, flipped, and crashed into several trees, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the crash happened around 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 along I-40 West near Stamey Farm Road.

A Subaru Outback was traveling west when the SUV ran off the road to the right, went down an embankment, overturned, and hit several trees, officials say.

The driver — identified as 67-year-old Rodney Steve Forner of Wirtz, Virginia — reportedly died at the scene.

Troopers say their initial investigation indicated that neither impairment nor speeding were contributing factors in the crash.

One westbound lane of I-40 was closed for about three hours Tuesday evening.
