UPDATE: Police identify driver found shot to death Sunday night in northwest Roanoke

UPDATE 2:14 p.m. 5/4/21: Police announced Tuesday the identity of the driver who was found dead with gunshot wounds in northwest Roanoke late Sunday night.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, the victim is 46-year-old Taniko Belt of Roanoke.

The investigation into Belt’s suspicious death is still ongoing.


UPDATE 1 p.m.: Police are investigating after a call about shots fired in northwest Roanoke late Sunday night led to the discovery of a dead driver with gunshot wounds along Peters Creek Road.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, word came in about shots fired near the intersection of Panorama Avenue NW and Westside Boulevard NW at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 2.

While officers were responding to that location, the department says they received reports of a vehicle crash on Peters Creek Road NW between Shenandoah Avenue NW and Salem Turnpike NW.

Police say they located a single vehicle in the median close to a power pole that was lying in the roadway. According to officials, appears as though the vehicle crashed into the pole and came to rest in the median.

Officers located the driver of the vehicle, but she was unresponsive. The woman reportedly had fatal gunshot wounds was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

Her identity will not be released until her family is properly notified.

According to the department, the investigation indicates the original shots fired call is connected to the motor vehicle crash.

Police believe the incident started in the 3800 block of Panorama Drive NW.

Authorities did not find any suspects at the scene and have not made any arrests yet in connection with this ongoing homicide investigation.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A large police presence blocked Peter’s Creek Road early Monday morning amid a suspicious death investigation in Roanoke.

Members of the Roanoke Police Department told WFXR News a call came in about a female body found at approximately 11:25 p.m. on Sunday, May 2.

Police say they are investigating this death as a homicide, but did not say where the body was found or why the death was considered suspicious.

Peter’s Creek Road has been reopened between Salem Turnpike and Shenandoah Avenue at this time.
