Solarize Virginia program to make solar power more accessible to Roanoke Valley homeowners

Roanoke Valley News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Thanks to Solarize Virginia, adding solar power to homes in parts of the Roanoke Valley and the New River Valley will be easier and more affordable.

According to an announcement from the City of Roanoke on Monday, June 14, the Solarize Virginia program reduces the cost and complexity of going solar by providing a one-stop shop for education and installation.

From Tuesday, June 15 through Aug. 30, residents in the Roanoke, Salem, and Blacksburg areas can sign up to receive a free solar satellite assessment and home energy assessment, as well as gain access to discounts and vetted installers.

Officials say the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) is managing this grassroots, community-based outreach initiative, which is presented in partnership with the City of Roanoke.

“At LEAP, we believe in efficiency first. That is why we provide free solar and home energy assessments to all Solarize participants. Now more than ever, we are seeing increased demand and support for solar in Virginia. We are proud to partner with the City of Roanoke to make solar accessible and affordable to Roanoke area residents and business owners.”

Chris Meyer, Executive Director, Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP)

Through a competitive bidding process, officials say LEAP — which provides ongoing customer support and education throughout the process — has selected Altenergy and Solar Connexion as their campaign installers for 2021.

“Citizens frequently ask me for new opportunities for affordable solar for their home. We are thrilled to offer Solarize Roanoke this summer, affordable solar, quality products, and experienced installers. Remember, if you live in the city, to take advantage of the Solar Tax Abatement to save even more money on your solar panels!”

Since 2014, the City of Roanoke says 546 contracts have been signed through LEAP’s Solarize program, thus generating more than 4.3 MW of solar capacity and more than $12 million in value.

“Since having my solar installed my bills have been greatly reduced–and the last two months I have not had a power bill at all! Working with the Solarize program made getting solar very easy and the price was much more affordable. I recommend it to everyone who can do it.”
