ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WFXR) — On Friday afternoon, crews battled a structure fire at a Rocky Mount home that housed seven people and a number of animals — including an alligator — but the house was destroyed.

The initial call came in around 3:20 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 for a fire in the 300 block of Elton Drive.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a home.

It took fire crews from multiple departments 45 minutes to contain the blaze.

Inside of the home, various animals were successfully removed including seven reptiles — including an alligator that measured at least five feet long — and some dogs. The reptiles were taken by Virginia Conservation Police.

There were no injuries; however, the home was determined to be a total loss.

Seven residents have been displaced and WFXR News has learned that they do have a place to temporarily stay.
