UPDATE 11:32 a.m.: A statewide search effort is underway for a damaged car following a “road rage” incident involving a crash and a shooting along I-81 in Roanoke County Friday morning, police say.

According to Virginia State Police, the incident took place shortly before 7:15 a.m. on Friday, June 17.

While there were no injuries in the shooting, police say the Mazda drove away from the scene, exiting I-81 onto I-581 toward Roanoke.

Officials tell WFXR News that a statewide broadcast has been placed on the Mazda — which has damage to the entire passenger side, as well as a Colorado license plate of BMUL57. If you have any information about this vehicle or Friday morning’s incident, you are asked to call Virginia State Police.

As of this writing, authorities say all lanes are open at mile marker 141 of I-81 North, but state troopers are still at the scene to collect evidence on the roadside.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke County motorists may run into some delays on Friday due to an incident shutting down an exit ramp on I-81 North.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the northbound exit ramp is closed at mile marker 141 of I-81 because of “security/police activity.”

Motorists are asked to find alternate routes for the time being.

WFXR News has reached out to Virginia State Police for more information about the circumstances surrounding this ramp closure.

This is a developing story.
