SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — A Salem man won the Mega Millions, but he was one number away from the jackpot.
The Virginia Lottery says the winner, Garland Hare bought his ticket at the Salem Mini Mart located at 2319 West Main Street. Hare says he selected his numbers using a combination of family birthdays and anniversaries.
The Virginia Lottery says Hare went on an overseas trip the day after he purchased his ticket. They say it wasn’t until after Hare arrived at his destination he realized that he match all five numbers.
“It was very unexpected!,” Hare told Virginia Lottery officials.
The winning numbers were 5,9,15,16, and 17. The Mega Ball number was 25.
Lottery officials report the ticket was one of seven nationwide to win the $1 million prize. They say the odds of matching all six numbers are one in 302,575,350.
