ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia is turning 38 this year, and celebrating with a special wish.

With the ’38 Years of Love Campaign,’ the organization is hoping to raise $38,000 in May to keep their good cause going. The nonprofit offers hospital patients and their families a place to stay at no cost, along with meals, laundry facilities, and social areas.

Shannon Boothe, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia, says the coronavirus pandemic hit them hard. For two years, they had to say goodbye to their volunteers, shut down their communal spaces, and provide COVID-safe housing for some of the most vulnerable patients.

“COVID is all about separating people out, six feet apart,” said Boothe. “Our house has always been about togetherness.”

The nonprofit is encouraging donations of $38 to celebrate 38 years, meaning about 1,000 people need to donate so the organization can provide its services to families visiting local hospitals.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia is also hosting spirit weeks throughout the month, so people can celebrate their services. In addition, the nonprofit has a wish-list of items people can buy in lieu of a monetary donation.
