Roanoke Valley News

UPDATE 4:03 p.m.: The Roanoke Police Department says one person is dead after Thursday afternoon’s crash involving multiple vehicles at the intersection of Orange Avenue NE and Williamson Road NE.

According to the department, word came in at approximately 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30 about a vehicle crash involving a moped at the intersection.

When police arrived at the scene, they say they found a critically-injured man lying in the roadway. Roanoke Fire-EMS took the man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, but the man was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Authorities say the driver of the moped was traveling east on Orange Avenue and tried to turn onto Williamson Road when he hit a stationary vehicle in the turning lane. The driver then lost control of the moped, fell into the nearest lane, and was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Police tell WFXR News that the driver of the tractor-trailer is cooperating as the investigation continues. At this time, no charges have been filed.

UPDATE 3:12 p.m.: VDOT says that the crash on I-581 at mile marker one in Roanoke has been cleared.

This closure at the northbound and southbound 4E exits was related to an incident involving multiple lane closures in the area around the intersection of Orange Avenue NE and Williamson Road NE.

UPDATE 1:22 p.m.: WFXR News has just confirmed that the tractor-trailer crash and the wrecked motorcycle are from the same incident along Orange Avenue in Roanoke.

The City of Roanoke E-911 Center says there are multiple lane closures in the area around the intersection of Orange Avenue NE and Williamson Road NE.

The closure of the northbound and southbound 4E exits at mile marker 1 on I-581 are also related to this incident.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — There are two exits closed along I-581 due to a tractor-trailer crash. There is also a wrecked motorcycle along Orange Avenue near Williamson Road, causing serious delays in the area.

However, it is unclear whether these crashes are related or separate.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) previously said that motorists on U.S. Route 460 East (Orange Avenue NE) can expect delays near Williamson Road NE, Route 116 South, U.S. Route 221 South, and U.S. 11 South.

There is no word on whether any of these roads are dealing with closures at this time.

However, according to VDOT, the northbound and southbound 4E exits on I-581 are closed at this time because of the tractor-trailer crash.

VDOT cameras also show delays on I-581 North all the way from mile marker one to mile marker zero.

This is still a developing story.
