Roanoke releases survey on renaming Lee Plaza

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.: The City of Roanoke’s Equity and Empowerment Advisory Board has released its public survey on the renaming of Lee Plaza.

The Board says they already received several suggestions during a public hearing that was held on March 4. Now, the public can vote on the name or concept they favor for the plaza.

Citizens can vote from the following choices:

The Equity and Empowerment Advisory Board will make a final decision. All responses must be submitted by Friday, May 14, at 5 p.m.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke’s Equity and Empowerment Board is moving ahead with possible replacements when it comes to the name of Lee Plaza.

The board held a meeting on Thursday, May 6 to vote on finalizing a survey that will be given to the community to share their thoughts on the names.

The choices that will be included in that survey are listed below:

  • Henrietta Lacks Plaza, after the woman who had a drastic impact on medical research
  • Sherman Lea Plaza, after the current mayor of Roanoke
  • Freedom Plaza
  • Star City Plaza

That survey is expected to be released at some point on Friday, May 7 on the City of Roanoke’s social media accounts and website.
