ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — After a four-week public competition featuring 20 nominees from across the country, USA TODAY named the the Roanoke River as the third best urban kayaking spot in the country.

The Roanoke River was one of 20 nominees for USA TODAY’s “10Best Reader’s Choice 2021” travel award contest for best urban kayaking spot.

The 45-mile waterway offers easy paddling for most of its length, making it an easy starting river.

On Friday, Feb. 26, Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge announced the Roanoke River took third place in USA TODAY’s contest.

Due to its unique proximity to downtown Roanoke as well as popular local parks, outfitters and trails, this river is a known metro mountain adventure in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. In addition to kayaking, the 45-mile blueway ranges from flatwater to Class II rapids as it flows through the region, offering tubing, fishing, birding and wildlife sightseeing nearly year-round.
