VINTON, Va. (WFXR) — The National Park Service announced that the Roanoke River Overlook and Fishermans Trail located along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 114.7 will be closed for bridge repairs.

Those who plan on paddling under the bridge should be aware of the potential for falling debris.

Repairs on the Roanoke River Bridge are scheduled from May 24, 2021 to spring 2022.

The next public access point on the Roanoke River is located about three miles downstream of the Niagara Dam at Explore Park’s Rutrough Point located at 4348 Rutrough Road SE.

“We recognize these Roanoke area closures create short term impacts, however we are pleased to know that in the coming years, this section of the Parkway will be restored in ways that will allow for many more years of high quality visitor experiences. We appreciate the local community’s support and leadership in providing helpful online information to navigate the detour in ways that encourage visitors to enjoy beautiful off-Parkway views and unique things to do in the communities along the detour route.”

Alexa Viets, acting superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway
