ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke City Councilman Robert Jeffrey Jr. was indicted by a grand jury on two new felony counts earlier this week.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office says the indictments surround Jeffrey allegedly obtaining money by false pretense from the city’s Economic Development Authority.
The two offenses are said to have occurred between Nov. 12, 2020, and Dec. 2, 2020. The amount of the larceny is said to be substantially above $1,000.
“I can’t say that I’m terribly surprised that something else was found,” said Roanoke resident David Garland.
Garland spoke at two city council meetings requesting Jeffrey step back from some of his duties. His first appearance with the council happened on July 19 after Jeffrey was indicted on embezzlement charges, and then again on Aug. 18 after investigators said information from the councilman’s city-issued laptop was remotely wiped while it was in police custody.
“My first thought essentially was I told you so. I think at this point it makes it clear that it’s also more than just perhaps some misunderstanding between him and some small local community organization,” Garland said.
Garland told WFXR News he now thinks Jeffrey should step down from his city position amid the indictments on the new felony charges.
“Ultimately, especially now with the question of deleted data from his computer and additional charges, it looks more like a reason for him to resign rather than simply step back,” Garland said.
It is unclear if the new felony charges are related to Jeffrey’s embezzlement charges. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 6.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said they have not set an exact date for the councilman to turn himself into authorities for the new legal charges; however, they are hoping he does so by the end of the week.
WFXR News attempted to get comments from Jeffrey’s attorney and other Roanoke City Council members, but no one was available to speak on Jeffrey’s latest indictments.
